WHERE IS MY DAY OFF? (THE GRAND MARCH)
"Where is my DAY OFF?"

"Kami butuh hari libur?"

"Ngay nghi cua toi o dau?"

"Wo yao sow chia"

WHERE IS MY DAY OFF?
The Migrant Empowerment Network in Taiwan(MENT) in cooperation with Hsinchu Catholic Diocese Migrants & Immigrants Service Center (HMISC) and other legal organizations are inviting every OFW  to support the Migrant Workers Rally this coming December 11, 2011. The main objective of this gathering is to secure the right to rest and leisure to migrant workers.

From the article posted on http://tw.migrant-workers.org/ the Council of Labor Affairs finally responded to hear the cry of many Migrant Workers especially the Domestic Workers by proposing the official Protection Act of Domestic Workers. This Act will determine the rights to have rest as well as restriction on maximum daily working hours through negotiations between the employee & the employer.

In response, everyone is invited to gather at the heart of Taipei's entertainment and shopping center in Xinyi District to alert the general public the real situation of our Domestic workers. As everyone is enjoying the weekend away from work, the thousands of our domestic migrant workers are still working, struggling and even dying under extreme labor conditions.

Once again, to all OFW here in Taiwan they need our support.

THE H1N1... Ang Pagbabalik
I was shocked this morning when I heard the news of my friend that one of the members of our church & 3 of her room mates had a H1N1 virus. And they are quarantined since yesterday sa Pluto. Well, anu nga ba ang H1N1?

According to CDC (center for disease control & prevention) of America, yes, the one mentioned in The Walking Dead series. H1N1 is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. It is also called sometimes as "swine flu" because some of the genes of the virus is the same with the influenza viruses that are normally occurs on pig.

Here are some questions normally asked regarding this virus infection.

Is the 2009 H1N1 virus contagious?

The 2009 H1N1 virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. Spread of the 2009 H1N1 virus is thought to occur in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing, sneezing or talking by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something – such as a surface or object – with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?

The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, including 2009 H1N1 and have respiratory symptoms without a fever. Severe illnesses and deaths have occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

This season, there is a seasonal flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu viruses and a 2009 H1N1 vaccine to protect against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (sometimes called “swine flu”). A flu vaccine is by far the most important step in protecting against flu infection. For information about the 2009 H1N1 vaccines, visit H1N1 Flu Vaccination Resources. For information about seasonal influenza vaccines, visit Preventing Seasonal Flu With Vaccination.

There are also everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like the flu.

Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.*
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.*) Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.

Other important actions that you can take are:

  • Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
  • Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs * (for when soap and water are not available), tissues and other related items could help you to avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious.

NO SORRY, NO WORK
Rumor has it.

Dati rati sabi sabi lang, haka haka. Tsismis, ganon.

Based on what I heard from one of my room mates, those who are having thier 2 years contract, finished are not be extended for 1 year more. Sa mga nakalipas na taon kasi, usually ang mga nagtatapos ng kanilang 2 years contract ay na-eextend ng isang taon pa or they like or good ang performance, iha-hire ka ulit, kasi nga naman kung maghihire sila ng bago, panibagong tuturuan, eh isa sa pinaka-ayaw nila ay ang may tinuturuan lalo na't hirap silang mag-ingles.

According sa mga kakwarto ko, iyon daw ngayon ang utos ng gobyerno dito na hindi na sila mag-rerenew ng ARC(Alien Residence Card) for extension & ban/freeze for hiring Filipino workers, dahil nga sa conflict between our country. And by this month, 10 ang uuwi sa kanilang company, yun yung hindi na pinag-extend, and rumor says that they will be replaced by the Thailanders.

**********

Kanina din, I had an argument with my supervisor with this 'sorry' issue.
A REMINDER FOR OFW

Two of our kababayan here in Taiwan lost their future, careers & dreams for their families due to this,
One lost his life & the other goes behind bars. Both came here to earn money & dream of a good and a secured future for their families, but in a snap of a finger, all of these are gone because of this bottle 'GINEBRA SAN MIGUEL'.

Based on the report coming from the Migrant Center, this things happened last week. Our two fellow kababayans was drunk and arguing on a girl, that alledgely girlfriend of the two. With the spirit of the liquor on their heads, one guy nabbed his knife and stabbed the other, that resulted the other died upon arriving to the hospital.
On the other side, the guy who stabbed the other, surrendered and was sent on Taoyuan Detention Center and according to Taiwan Law, homecide cases are usually 5 to 10(?) years in prison, while murder cases, must spent 15 years. And as of the press time, the guy who stabbed the other was sent behind bars, while the other was arranged to sent back home as dead cold body.

Both loose control.

Both have their own families waiting for their comeback. But what if the comeback that their family are longing for, is a cold body on coffin of their son or spouse?

So, to all of our kababayang OFW, control yourself on drinking liquor. DRINK MODERATELY. Set your angers aside, so that no one hurts & lost lives. We're are here abroad to follow our dreams for ourselves & our families, not to follow death.
