2011, marks the centennial year for Taiwan as Republican country. According to history, 1912 was referred to as “the first year of the Republic of China,” and 2008 is “the 97th year of the Republic,” and so on. This is a continuation of the millennia-old system in China, beginning Chinese New Year designations as the beginning of a new era, which once coincided with the ascension of a new emperor.
To commemorate the centennial year, the government & some of its department announced a contest for local & foreign people residing in the country island wide. This contest, on behalf of the tourism board of Taiwan, have the theme "100 Fun Things to Do in Taiwan".
